Closing copy

Two hours before close, the copy desk becomes quieter rather than louder. Reporters stop crossing the room and begin answering messages from their desks while editors work through the remaining pages in a fixed order. Names are checked against notebooks and public records; dates are compared with earlier drafts; captions are matched to the correct photographs. A late change to one sentence can alter a headline, a standfirst and a reference elsewhere in the issue, so every amendment is marked and passed forward instead of being silently replaced. The chief subeditor keeps a short list of unresolved points beside the page plan. One story still needs a second source for a figure. Another has a place name that appears in two spellings. A review has arrived fifty words over its agreed length and must be tightened without flattening the writer’s voice. Nobody is trying to make the prose sound identical. The aim is consistency where readers depend on it and character where the author has earned it. As pages clear, their status changes from open to checked, then to final. The rhythm is methodical, but the order can change in a minute when a correction arrives or a legal query reopens a paragraph. Near the deadline, the desk reads the issue less as separate stories than as a network of facts, names, captions and references that must agree with one another before the files leave the room.

Picture meeting

Photographs enter the issue in groups, rarely one at a time. The picture editor begins with a wide selection and looks for a sequence that can carry information without repeating the written story. One frame may establish a place, another may reveal a gesture, and a third may be valuable because it contradicts the obvious choice. Captions are drafted beside the images while names, dates, permissions and credit lines are still close at hand. Cropping happens late enough that the full frame remains visible during discussion. A horizontal photograph that feels quiet on screen may become decisive when paired with a short article, while a dramatic portrait can lose force if it competes with an equally loud page opposite. The final choice is not simply the sharpest or most beautiful image. It has to survive reproduction, sit honestly beside the reporting and add something the text cannot provide. Before the meeting ends, every selected photograph has an owner, a caption status and a clear place in the issue, while the rejected frames remain attached to the assignment rather than disappearing into an unnamed folder.

Reader correspondence

Book · Dense reading

Reader mail reaches the magazine through several routes: handwritten envelopes, forwarded messages, short notes sent from phones and careful responses that quote whole passages from the previous issue. The first job is sorting, not editing. Subscription questions go to customer service, factual corrections go to the relevant desk, and letters intended for publication are read together so the page does not become a row of identical opinions. Space is limited, but variety matters more than volume. A concise disagreement may sit beside a generous clarification from someone who knows the subject professionally. Names and locations are confirmed before anything is shortened. When a letter must be cut, the editor removes repetition and background before touching the sentence that carries the writer’s main point. The tone is preserved even when the wording becomes tighter. Some correspondents ask to be identified only by a first name; others want a job title included because it explains their perspective. Those decisions are recorded with the same care as the text. By the time the page is assembled, the letters no longer look like an inbox. They form a small public conversation shaped by selection, verification and restraint, with enough difference between voices for readers to understand that the publication has not written the responses itself.

Commissioning table

A new issue begins with more possibilities than pages. At the commissioning table, editors bring short proposals rather than finished stories: a person worth interviewing, a question that needs reporting, a place that has changed, a review that can wait for the right release. Each idea is tested against the rest of the issue before anyone assigns it. Two strong pieces may be too similar in pace or subject to sit together, while a modest service article can provide the practical counterweight a long investigation needs. The flatplan stays open during the discussion, but page counts remain provisional until reporting has begun. Writers leave with a clear brief, an agreed length, a first deadline and the name of the editor who will read the earliest draft. Photographers and illustrators are commissioned separately when the story needs them, so visual work can develop from the reporting rather than decorate a finished page. Several ideas are held back deliberately. A good proposal is not weakened by waiting; sometimes it becomes more useful when the next issue gives it enough room.
